Book Recommendation: Heir Apparent

I just finished a great book: Heir Apparent by Vivian Velde Vande.

It takes place in a future where virtual reality games are so realistic you feel like you're living the game. Giannine receives a session in a virtual reality arcade for her fourteenth birthday and chooses to play the game Heir Apparent. While playing, a protest group sabotages the machinery. Now she has an added incentive to win -- she needs to in order to save her life.

Here's the review from School Library Journal:

Giannine Bellisario is about to celebrate her 14th birthday. This year, she actually receives a present from her father on time. It is a gift certificate to any Rasmussem Gaming Center Virtual Reality Arcade. Crossing a picket line formed by CPOC (Citizens to Protect Our Children) to enter, she decides to use her certificate for a total-immersion game called Heir Apparent. The object is to be crowned king. When the demonstrators damage the center, the protagonist is on her own and must complete the game successfully in order to escape permanent brain damage. Ghosts, witches, wizards, and magical tools help her as she races against time and faces many setbacks. Challenges range from barbarian attacks and peasant uprisings to a giant dragon. In addition, the half brothers and the hostile queen have treacherous plans to keep the crown for themselves. This adventure includes a cast of intriguing characters and personalities. The feisty heroine has a funny, sarcastic sense of humor and succeeds because of her ingenuity and determination.

This Wednesday, August 9, at 6:30 p.m. come to the South County Branch (directions) to learn all about Yu-Gi-Oh. Ed Evans and his staff from "All Things Fun" in Berlin are coming to teach us about the game as well as the mechanics of a tournament. Then we'll play a round.

Book sale at Vogelson

Now that summer vacation is almost here, you'll have some time to read, watch videos and listen to music. Stock up at the Friends of the Library's giant book sale on Friday and Saturday at our Vogelson branch (directions).

There will be over 20,000 books of all types, CDs, videos, books-on-tape, LPs, magazines, and more. Prices range from 50 cents to $3.00.

A couple of days ago I wanted to post a poll on favorite computer games. But when I went to the website that I used to make polls, I discovered it was gone! I found another place to create a webpoll, but every time I've tested it since I put it up, the site has been down. :-(

I just finished playing the new computer game Dreamfall, and even though we don't have it here at the library, I'd highly recommend it. It's the sequel to The Longest Journey, which was the Adventure Game of the Year in 2003. It takes place 10 years after the end of The Longest Journey, in the future. You play as a teenage girl, a mercenary, and April Ryan (from the first game) traveling between the worlds of science, magic and dreams. The graphics are amazing and the voice acting is quite good.

If you don't like to listen to long stretches of dialogue, this game is not for you. Sometimes you need to just sit back, watch and listen. But if you like fantasy, check it out. One warning, though -- it's part 2 of a three part series. I didn't know when I played it, and yelled at my computer when I finished the game!

Hoot -- Book and Movie

Are you planning to see the movie Hoot when it comes out this weekend? I read the book a couple of years ago, and thought it was great, and very funny. Here's part of the review from Amazon.com.

Roy Eberhardt is the new kid--again. This time around it's Trace Middle School in humid Coconut Grove, Florida. But it's still the same old routine: table by himself at lunch, no real friends, and thick-headed bullies like Dana Matherson pushing him around. But if it wasn't for Dana Matherson mashing his face against the school bus window that one day, he might never have seen the tow-headed running boy. And if he had never seen the running boy, he might never have met tall, tough, bully-beating Beatrice. And if he had never met Beatrice, he might never have discovered the burrowing owls living in the lot on the corner of East Oriole Avenue. And if he had never discovered the owls, he probably would have missed out on the adventure of a lifetime. Apparently, bullies do serve a greater purpose in the scope of the universe. Because if it wasn't for Dana Matherson...

The Haddon Township will be hosting two great programs for teens this Tuesday, April 25th. Are you interested in writing? At 4 p.m. come to our "Basics of Writing" program. Learn the ins and outs of becoming an effective communicator from a high school newspaper editor who will reveal her secrets.

Think you might like an internship? At 7 p.m. Tuesday night you can see a presentation by the president of Jersey Intern.com. Find out about the great internships available both locally and nationally and how to get one.

The South County Branch (directions) hosts a get-together of knitters and crocheters at 7 p.m. on the 4th Monday of the month (the next meeting is Monday, the 24th). There is also a weekly afternoon crochet club held at Shelf Life, in the Echelon Mall (directions), on Wednesdays from 4:30 - 5:30 p.m.

All skill levels are welcome, so please join us!

I loved this book! I highly recommend it! It is about a boy who is on the school track team. He would go into the mill's woods to run everyday. One day he find a cocoon by tripping over something. Because of his interest in insects, he took it home.

His father is ill and may die soon. He is in love with one of his teachers. He has a choice to make: stay with his family or town's people OR help this new species of butterfly to survive. What will he choose?

Recommended Book: Ender's Game

I just finished listening to a great book on CD: Ender's Game. It was published back in 1985, so I don't know why I never read it before! It's a story of Earth in the future. The planet has been attacked twice by aliens called Buggers, and the military are searching desperately for a general that can defeat them when they return for a third time.

Ender Wiggin, a young genius, is recruited when he is six years old and sent to an orbiting battle school to be trained to fight the Buggers. Will he survive the obstacles the teachers set for him? Will he be Earth's saviour?

The CD available from the library is a full cast version and very well acted. We also have several copies of the book in our system. And after you've finished the book you can look forward to the movie. David Benioff, the writer of the screenplay for Troy, has been signed by Warner Bros. to pen the script.

Have you ever checked out a book at the library and really liked it, but then forgot the title or author when you wanted to recommend it to someone else? Have you come across a book or video, and you're not sure if you've read or seen it before? Then you should try the new Reading History feature in our catalog.

Go the catalog, choose "View Library Record," then enter your name and library barcode. In addition to seeing what you have checked out and the status of your requests, you can now choose to see your reading history. Click on "Opt in" and the library will keep a record of what you've checked out, starting with the next checkout. You can edit the list or delete it at any time.

Each year, New Jersey teens vote for their favorite books in three categories: Fiction, Grades 6-8; Fiction, Grades 9-12; and Nonfiction, Grades 6-12. There are 20 nominees for each category. See the nominees and read brief descriptions of the books here. You can then vote online from this page. Voting ends on January 13, and winners will be announced in February.

Recommended Books: Inkheart and Inkspell

I just finished reading a great book: Inkspell by Cornelia Funke. It is the sequel to Inkheart.

In Inkheart, Meggie discovers that her father,Mo, can literally read characters out of books. Unfortunately, he has accidentally read some real villains out of the book Inkheart. When the villains kidnap Mo, Meggie must try to find and rescue him.

In Inkspell, Meggie and her family are read into the book Inkheart, and find that while adventures in books are exciting, in real life they can be very dangerous.

I'd recommend both books highly, but make sure you start with Inkheart. And here's a warning -- there are obviously plans for another sequel, because everything is not wrapped up at the end of Inkspell!
